The story

In May 1814, Amelia Ryerse received unwanted fireside guests when American soldiers arrived with orders to burn. As her mother pleaded with the commanding officer to spare their home, an officer wordlessly gathered coals from the hearth. Every building was set ablaze – except for the homestead.

Just a few yards down the street from this quilt is a loyalist cemetery containing a tombstone for three unknown British Soldiers who died at Fort Norfolk in 1812.  The cemetery also includes the burial site and  and tombstone of Samuel Ryerse, the first captain of the Norfolk Militia in 1812.
