The story

Union Jack –
was created in 1801 to represent the Union of Scotland, the Kingdom of Ireland and the Kingdom of Great Britain. It was under this flag that early settlers and the following generations of Canada grew and prospered.
This community and country were established under British rule. Many early settlers identified as citizens under the British Crown. Canada would not be developed until about sixty years after the construction of George Ward’s Inn. Many people would remain loyal to Britain because most settlers were in fact British or apart of the 1801 Union.
However, as generations were born and raised in the newly settled area, loyalties shifted. Many of the children born in North America did not identify as British citizens because they had no connection to their homelands. It is through the Union Jack that both the connection and distinction of our European heritage is remembered and distinct Canadian identity is born.
